- Qualified Instructors: We prioritised classes led by experienced instructors with strong backgrounds in sewing, design, or fashion. This is to ensure they have the expertise to guide students effectively.

Other students also expressed their appreciation for learning these sustainable techniques, saying they added depth and purpose to their sewing.
The small class sizes at the Chelsea studio created an ideal learning environment. Each of us had an individual workstation, ensuring personalised feedback and a focused, well-organised space to develop skills.
While the tuition schedule offers flexibility, some students mentioned that the range of options could be a little confusing, so checking availability in advance is a good idea.
Great place to learn how to sew and get creative!
“Fashion School is such a great place for children to learn – my daughter has loved the holiday classes, and is really looking forward to the work Fashion School is going to do with her school. Caroline is simply brilliant – she gets the balance of enthusiasm, skill and respect just right. All the other staff are lovely too – all know their stuff and are great role models as to what’s good about sewing. The children really learn how to sew, think and design independently. It’s incredibly empowering to be able to make and adapt your own clothes, and I’ve seen my daughter’s confidence, skill and interest grow. We are so lucky to have Fashion School here, it’s a fantastic local resource. I love it – I want to sign up for a class myself!”

A magical space to create and dream big!
“My daughter has absolutely loved the sewing class. She created the most amazing bucket hat and now wants to become a fashion designer. She is thriving and so full of enthusiasm and counts down the days until the next class. Thank you for creating this magical space for our children to learn and develop their skills.”

Taking a Sew Pretty Me class felt like a retreat into creativity.
The studio, nestled in a charming garden in Wimbledon, has a cosy and welcoming atmosphere. It’s small but thoughtfully set up, with each workstation giving enough room to work comfortably.
The relaxed pace made it easy to follow along, even as a beginner. The tutors are experienced and incredibly patient, guiding us through practical projects like making tote bags or cushion covers.
We appreciated the personal attention, as the small class size allowed for plenty of one-on-one help.
The garden setting added a calming touch to the experience, making it a great way to unwind while learning a new skill.
However, booking early to secure a spot is important as the space is very limited.
This studio revived my stitching after 10 years.
“Have been taking a couple of courses at this sewing studio in the last month and a half and I have to say it has been an amazing experience so far. I had a sewing machine tucked away for 10 years because I got stuck at the first few hurdles but after a couple of sessions here I have been using the machine to do multiple projects from curtains to cushions and now on to clothes! The classes seem to have a good size and the structure too.”

Relaxed classes, patient teaching, and a lovely garden
“Just had a very enjoyable class at Sew Pretty, and I highly recommend for anyone thinking about learning to sew or learning to use a sewing machine. It was a relaxed class of 5 beginners today and Sophie our teacher could not have been more patient and nice. She gives you ample time to get things right and practice, sharing her expert knowledge on sewing machines as well as tips on practical stuff such as hand placements, fabric and sewing machine positions on table etc. I felt great having made my first (of many more to come!) cushion cover. Lovely garden workshop setting and hospitality. Thank you.”

Ray Stitch stands out for its focus on creating practical, finished projects in every class. This is a refreshing change from schools that prioritise theory over hands-on work.
We found their single 3-hour classes ideal for beginners who want to try sewing without committing to a long-term course. Everything is provided, from premium fabrics to high-quality tools, so you can show up and focus on learning.
During our session, the simple tote bag project was straightforward yet incredibly rewarding to complete and take home.
The instructors were exceptional. They tailored their guidance to each student’s skill level, creating a relaxed but productive atmosphere.
However, the classes are popular, so booking ahead is necessary to secure your spot.
I loved the amazing instructors and the quality of the projects
“I came here to take an intensive sewing course and was blown away by the quality of the course and instructors! They were sooooo good! I learned so much in 3 days and walked away with new bags (you make bags in the course), new friends and excitement for my next project. The staff helped us choose materials and were so patient answering all our questions. They also made sure were comfortable and fed, and having a good time.”

Classes are relaxed and helpful
“…I arrived to the class, with my organza cut for the dress making class. A bit of a risk, but she put me at ease and I felt anything was possible. Giving myself additional work – slightly diverting from the project, she was more than happy to show me additional skills including French seams and bindings.
If I could i would be there every day!
Cups of tea and coffee flowed, I felt more like I was at a mates house gossiping. However we all got our heads down and pushed through a good 9 hrs sewing session…”

The workshops were efficient and flexible, allowing us to work at our own pace. The tutors were patient and encouraging, often checking in to offer personalised tips or to explain a tricky step more clearly.
Their spacious cutting tables and professional sewing machines stood out as a big plus. They made measuring, cutting, and stitching smooth and enjoyable.
Additionally, the open-plan layout added to the studio’s energetic and social vibe. However, it might feel a bit too lively for someone looking for a quieter environment.
The studio is warm and vibrant, with enjoyable and easy lessons for beginners
“Make Town is the perfect space for creatives, makers, sewers, and weavers. The studio is cozy and colorful, and a perfect space to learn a new craft, or get reacquainted with an old one. I highly recommend the weaving workshops – ‘Freestyle Weaving’ and ‘Intro to the Loom’ (the photos are from this 2-day session). As an weaving beginner this was a perfect place to start – Brooke and Ali’s expertise made learning how to weave fun and approachable. Definitely check this place out!”

Great sewing class with a supportive teacher
“The Learn to Sew course was such a fantastic experience for me over the past three weeks. Ali was SUCH a great teacher – calm, encouraging, patient and explained everything brilliantly – and the whole thing has made me really love sewing and want to do more. I would definitely recommend MakeTown and will be back again soon!”

5. The Garden Sewing School

Address: 44 Pilgrim’s Ln
Phone Number: +447840355448
Business hours:
- Mon-Sun: 10:00 am – 8:00 pm
The Garden Sewing School stands out for its peaceful, homely environment. It offers sewing classes from a cosy studio surrounded by greenery.
When we attended, we noticed how personalised the teaching felt. The small class sizes allowed the tutors to give individual attention, making learning easy at your own pace.
Their projects cater to all levels, from beginners stitching simple items to more advanced learners tackling detailed garments. The school also provides all the necessary tools and materials, so there’s no need to bring anything.
One minor drawback is its location in Teddington. While charming, the place is in the outer reaches of London. This may make it less accessible for those who rely on public transport or live far from southwest London.
Charlotte’s teaching style is encouraging, and friendly
“I love going to this space, it’s fun, welcoming and supportive atmosphere makes my sewing journey so much easier. If you like me and worry about getting wrong, Charlotte’s teaching style is encouraging, and friendly and makes you feel more confident in your ability. I have learnt so much from her classes. Her sewing room/classes have provided me with a therapeutic space, where I can switch off the outside world and allow my creativity to flow. All the sewing machines are easy to use and she also has overlockers (Yay)… Plus there are plenty of teas and biscuits to choose from, that’s always a good thing…”

They have amazing state-of-the-art equipments
“I had the pleasure of attending The Garden Sewing School recently for a workshop where we made a utensil roll. I had limited knowledge of using any sewing machines before, and Charlotte was so encouraging and explained everything simply and clearly making all the new students feel confident in what she was teaching and how we were learning. It was such a great experience and such fun. All the equipment is state of the art Pfaff machines, in a beautifully laid out workshop with all accessories within easy reach. The workshop is set in a tranquil setting in a beautiful garden near Hampstead High Street. I will definitely be doing another course very soon.”
